Personal actions: Waste
What Can I do?
First of all, when purchasing new items, ask yourself the following questions:
Do I really need this?
- how often will I use it,
- will it last,
- can I borrow it or hire it from a leasing company?
Is there a better option?
- Can I repair something I already have?
- Will this last,
- Is it made from recyclable material and is it easily recyclable?
How long will I use this?
- Can I use non-disposable packaging instead (ie, travel mug instead of a throw-away coffee cup, cutlery instead of plastic utensils, reusable water bottle, cloth bag)
- Can I borrow instead?
A great idea is to give yourself a cooling-off time before you purchase something to avoid impulse shopping.
The next time you find yourself wanting to buy that strimmer or wrench set on offer, walk away, wait a few days, and if you still feel that you need that item, go back. This way, you buy what you need rather than what you want at the moment AND may save a few bob along the way.
When you’re finished using something, before throwing it away in the black bin, ask yourself:
Can I sell it or give it away? One person’s rubbish is another’s treasure. See Blogs below:
