With support from the Eastern Midlands Region Waste Office, VOICE have partnered up with The Dublin Food Coop, ShareCity and WeShare to bring a Library of Things to Dublin for the first time as part of National Reuse Month.
A Library of Things allows people to borrow items needed only on an occasional basis. By sharing items it reduces the need for material production and consumption, and allows people to free up space in their homes and try new hobbies without the need to buy new supplies. The Library of Things is an initiative already happening in many towns and cities around the world, but has yet to catch on here in Ireland.
The Library will be hosted in the Dublin Food Coop in Newmarket Square for the month of October as part of National Reuse Month, an initiative of the Regional Authorities to promote reuse with a nationwide series of events. It will launch on Sunday October 1st and will operate on Thursdays 5.30 - 7.30pm, Saturdays and Sundays 11-4pm.
The Library invites the public to participate in the sharing community by donating or lending items they no longer need or don’t use very often, or by volunteering for a couple of hours at the library. Members of the public are welcome to drop off their items or attend our volunteer induction evening at the Dublin Food Coop on Thursday September 28th at 6pm.
In addition to the Library of Things The Dublin Food Coop will also host a ‘FixJam’ where people can come and learn how to repair things like bicycles, lamps and shoes on October 7th.
And on October 14th, join us for ‘Swapsies’ clothes swap & t-shirt to bag upcycling workshop. ‘Attention Attire’ will also run a workshop transforming rescued festival camping gear into fashionable, weather-proof wears.
To see what is on offer we will be updating the library list of things on our WeShare page.
