Generation Awake

Have you heard about Generation Awake? This campaign focuses on the importance of recycling and sustainable consumption by raising awareness about the impact of everyday behaviour on the environment.Have you thought about how much you waste everyday? There is still value in that old sofa or aluminium can.Much of what we consider waste can be reused, recycled, exchanged and repaired rather than being thrown away. Every day we spend money on disposable items with a limited lifespan. If we put our focus on what we are buying and how we are using it, a lot of money can be saved. Here are some simple tips from Generation Awake on how to reduce your personal waste.

  • Recycle your batteries – The mercury, lead and cadmium found in batteries can be harmful to the earth if they end up in a landfill. You can recycle your batteries at places like your local school, recycling amenity centre or electronic shops.

  • Cut food waste – Only cook what you’re going to eat – save your leftovers for the next day.
  • Save energy with an efficient fridge – Keep your fridge three quarters full and defrost your freezer regularly.
  • Think twice before replacing your phone – Many valuable resources were used to create your current phone. If you do decide to replace it, dispose of your current phone responsibly – give it to a friend, sell it or recycle it.
Compost June
  • Choose peat-free compost – Peatland soils are important. Buy compost labeled as “peat free” or better yet, make your own compost.
