What is MENSY

Embark on a journey with the MENSY project—a groundbreaking initiative designed to amplify the impact of partner organisations in the feminist and environmental sectors, focusing on youth engagement.

Our mission is to create a comprehensive suite of training resources on menstruation and sustainability, incorporating proven elements from existing programmes and scaling them for use across Europe and beyond.

At the heart of MENSY is our commitment to combat menstrual poverty by breaking the taboo surrounding menstruation. Despite being a natural and universal process, menstruation remains a hushed topic, leading to inadequate conditions and a lack of systemic support for menstruators worldwide.

The silence around menstruation perpetuates period poverty, resulting in injustice and inequity for millions of menstruators who lack access to essential menstrual products, education, and sanitation facilities. The MENSY project seeks to unravel this injustice by providing proper information and fostering accessibility to safe, fair, and environmentally sustainable menstrual products.

In a world where the majority of menstrual products are single-use and contribute to environmental, economic, health, and social impacts, MENSY envisions a shift towards reusable, toxic-free, and plastic-free alternatives. Through engaging at least 160 youth leaders, we aim to pioneer the "Menstruation: Empowerment and Sustainability" training programme, fostering a new generation of advocates for environmental, economic, and gender justice in menstrual education.

By the project's end, we anticipate 80 dedicated youth leaders from eight European countries committed to conducting training sessions within one year of completing the pilot programme.

Beyond education, MENSY's impact will extend to advocacy at local, regional, national, European, and global levels, raising awareness about period poverty, the menstrual taboo, and the environmental implications of single-use plastic-based menstrual products.

Youth organisations in each partner country will form our Youth Advisory Council, ensuring the voices and needs of young people are central in the development of this project. Here in Ireland the youth organisations involved are Youth Work Ireland, YMCA, NYCI, Young Social Innovators and Clonakilty Community Youth Centre.
